Vitamin Treatment for Retinal degenerations

There are a number of retinal degenerations in the dog.

Currently most veterinary ophthalmologists agree that there is no treatment that is proven to work on the most commonly seen retinal degenerations (including generalised progressive retinal atrophy - or commonly known as PRA).

A recent study in Japan indicated that vitamin supplementation in dogs may be benificial and certainly unlikely to be harmfull.

The Japanese study started following multicentre trials of vitamin supplementation for AMD (Agerelated Macular Degeneration) in man.

There is no current commercial product that will contain the vitamins used in Japan but the giving one capsule of each of the following two products pr day to your dog will provide the same vitamins (at the same of higher concentration):

Both are available from Solgar - Solgar.co.uk or Solgar.com: (links go to the UK website)

Lutein Lycopene Carotene Complex Vegicaps (code: E1671) - one jar will last 30 days

Vision Guard Plus (Code E316) - one jar will last 60 days

If you suspect your pet/animal may have a retinal disease/degeneration you can contact your veterinarian to arrange a referral to the Animal Medical Centre Referral Services, Manchester, to arrange a consultation with Dr Thomas Ffrangcon Evans.

This section of mammaleye.com is written for Owner's of patients under my therapy. Others may of cause gain knowledge about eye diseases in pets. Remember that other veterinary ophthalmologists may wish to treat diseases of the eye in a different way than myself.

If you as an owner want further information (scientific) about eye diseases then have a look at http://www.mammaleye.com/prof.htm or go to pubmed and do a search on Medline - the main resource of scientific information for the whole medical profession.
