Maxitrol ®

Maxitrol® contains dexamethasone and neomycin/polymyxin B. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that has superb qualities of controlling inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva. Neomycin/polymyxin B is an antibiotic combination that kill's most bacteria that may be involved in infections of the cornea and conjunctiva.
Maxitrol® is mainly used to control corneal inflammation in the dog (pannus, episcleritis) and cat (eosinophillic keratitis) and to reduce scarring after healing of ulcers. Maxitrol® may also reduce vascularisation of the cornea after chronic dry eye in the dog.
After unblocking tear ducts, Maxitrol® may be used 1-2 times daily to reduce the inflammation of the tear duct and prevent re-blocking.
For inflammation inside the eye most veterinary ophthalmologists agree that Pred Forte® is slightly more effective than Maxitrol®.
Neomycin has been reported to be a potential allergen and therefore Maxitrol® may cause an allergic reaction. If you notice given Maxitrol® causes much irritation to your dog, you should contact your veterinary surgeon to discuss the possibility of using a different steroid eye drop.
If using Maxitrol® it is important as an owner to look out for sudden pain, such as it may occur in a corneal ulcers, because the dexamethasone may slow healing of such ulcers. If you notice sudden pain and the dog or cat pawing it's eye, contact you vet a.s.a.p. and stop the Maxitrol® drops.
